Barrister. Born 14 June 1882, Sorrento. Son of Clifden Henry (Church of England reader born in Ireland) and Kate Amelia Andrews. Married c.1919 Ernestine Isabella Mary Campton, four sons. Deceased 11 August 1969.

Educated at state school, Melbourne Education Institute, Melbourne University, LLB 1909; admitted to Commonwealth Institute of Accountants 1905; called to Bar 1911 (NSW 1939), specialised in commercial, income tax, copyright and local government law; KC 1935; chairman Equity Trustees Co. Ltd (1949), Mutual Store Ltd, Moldex Ltd, Pearl Assurance Co. Ltd, Australian Cement Ltd; director Metropolitan Industries (1962), Investors Pty Ltd; Kt 1945; KBE 1952; chairman Sir William Angliss Fund; member State War Advisory Council 1940-45; vice-president Trinity Grammar School; president Royal Society of St George.

Nationalist Party, United Australia Party, Liberal Party, Liberal and Country Party, unofficial Legislative Council leader 1937-43; lost endorsement 1952 after refusal to vote against Greater Melbourne Council Bill, stood as Independent Liberal.

MLC for East Yarra Province February 1930 (by-election)-June 1958 (defeated). Minister without Portfolio March-April 1935. President of the Legislative Council 1943-58.
