Educated Trinity Grammar, Monash University

Barrister and Solicitor.  Entered parliament at a by-election May 1983.  At age 25, then the youngest MP in Australia.

Joined the Liberal Party at age 16 whilst doing HSC.  President of the Victorian Liberal Students Union 1977. State President of the Young Liberal Movement 1980.  Federal President of the Young Liberal Movement 1982.  Member of the International Democrat Union 1981.  (Vice Chairman of the IYDU 1981-1985).  Director of the Australian Institute of Political Science 1982-1988.  Director of the Playbox Theatre 1991-1993.  Trustee of the Melbourne Cricket Ground 1992-1996.  Member of the National Council for the Centenary of Federation 1996- 2001.  Publications: The Australian States: Towards a Renaissance 1987.
